Industrial VFD replacement checklist: what must match before installation
A VFD replacement checklist covering input power, motor current, duty, enclosure, braking, feedback, communications, parameters, and commissioning.
Matching horsepower alone can leave you with the wrong voltage, current, duty, options, enclosure, or control method.
Record the fault and operating context
Capture the complete fault history, keypad messages, operating load, and events preceding the trip. Confirm incoming power, motor insulation and wiring, cooling, mechanical load, and external interlocks according to facility procedures. A replacement drive can be damaged or trip immediately if the underlying motor, cable, power, or process problem remains.
Collect both drive and motor nameplate data
Horsepower is only a starting point. The replacement must be selected for the input supply, motor voltage, full-load current, frequency, phases, application duty, overload requirement, ambient conditions, and installation method.
- Drive catalog number, frame, input voltage and phase
- Output current ratings and normal- or heavy-duty rating
- Motor voltage, full-load current, frequency, speed, and power
- Enclosure type, ambient temperature, altitude, and ventilation
- Branch protection, disconnect, bypass, reactor, and filter arrangement
Identify every option and control connection
The base drive may depend on communication, encoder, safety, I/O, braking, filtering, or feedback options. Record option-board catalog numbers and photograph terminal wiring before removal. Confirm whether those options transfer to the replacement and whether their firmware is supported.
Document start/stop method, speed reference, digital and analog I/O, relay outputs, network control, safe-torque-off circuits, encoder feedback, braking resistor, and external contactors. Changes to safety-related circuits require the facility's formal review and validation process.
Secure and review the parameter set
Back up drive parameters using approved tools when possible, but do not treat a parameter download as a substitute for review. A different firmware or drive family may interpret parameters differently, omit functions, or require a conversion.
At minimum, document motor data, acceleration and deceleration, speed limits, control mode, current limits, I/O assignments, network addressing, fault behavior, restart settings, carrier frequency, and application-specific tuning.
Commission the complete driven system
Qualified personnel should verify wiring, grounding, protection, rotation, motor data, and safety circuits before operation. Begin according to the manufacturer's commissioning procedure and the site's lockout/tagout and electrical-safety program.
Test at commanded speeds and expected loads. Verify current, direction, acceleration, deceleration, braking, communications, interlocks, alarms, bypass behavior, and process response. Record the final parameter backup and installed drive information.
Drive replacement is an electrical and controls task. Selection and commissioning should be performed or approved by qualified personnel.

- Input supply, output current, duty, overload, and enclosure confirmed
- Option boards, braking, feedback, filters, and communications documented
- Control wiring and parameter backup preserved

- Loaded commissioning test and final parameter backup scheduled

Can I copy the old VFD parameters into a newer drive?
Possibly, but the converted parameters must be reviewed. Different families or firmware can use different functions, defaults, ranges, and option support.
